Virtual Macromolecules Lab Lab Directions This lab activity is a virtual lab, meaning you will conduct all of it online at the following website. Use the directions below to navigate through the activity and answer the questions below. Then, take the “Virtual Macromolecules Lab” Quiz using your answers to this lab. Overview: In this lab assignment, you will visit the Oklahoma Community College’s Organic Molecules website to learn how scientists test foods for different biochemicals. Then you will test a variety of foods (virtually) to see which macromolecules they contain. Click to view the website we will use in this lab: http://www.occc.edu/biologylabs/Documents/Organic%20Compounds/Organic%20Compounds.ht m Part 1: Learn about Each Macromolecule Test Read through the first page of the lab pictured above. Carbohydrates Tests (there are two): Click on the Carbohydrates link. Click through the activity to learn how to test for simple sugars (Benedict’s Test) and for starches (Iodine Test). 1.List the steps and reagent used to test for simple sugars: Virtual Macromolecules Lab 1 of 3 2.Complete the table below to indicate what a positive and negative test for simple sugars looks like. 3.List the steps and reagent used to test for starch: 4.Complete the table below to indicate what a positive and negative test for starch looks like. Proteins Test: From the main page, click on the Proteins link. Click through the activity to learn how to test for proteins with the Biuret Test. 5.List the steps and reagent used to test for proteins: 6.Complete the table below to indicate what a positive and negative test for proteins looks like. Lipids Test: From the main page, click on the Lipids link. Click through the activity to learn how to test for lipids with Sudan IV. 7.List the steps and reagent used to test for lipids: 8.Complete the table below to indicate what a positive and negative test for lipids looks like. Table 1. Macromolecule Test Indicator Table (some of this has been started for you…) Test Simple Sugars Reagent Used Benedict’s Negative Test Result Positive Test Result blue Starch Protein Lipid Part 2: Food Testing Now you will test a series of foods with each of the four tests you examine above. Go back to the main page and click on Foods. Choose each food and test it with all four tests.
