What’s a predicate???
• The part of a sentence that expresses what is
said about the subject.
• Is usually defined as a word group that comes
after the subject to complete the meaning of
the sentence.
• It may be just a single word, the verb.
• It may be a word group made up of a main
verb and any helping verbs (VERB PHRASE).
Predicate Noun
• Also called a predicate nominative OR a
completer, or complement, because it
completes the verb.
• It’s a single noun or a noun phrase that
renames the subject of a sentence and follows
a form of the verb “to be” or another linking
verb.
Examples

Predicate Adjectives
• A predicate adjective is very similar to a
predicate noun in that it completes the
predicate and follows an intransitive/linking
verb.
• Instead of renaming the subject, it modifies it.
Here are some sentences with the predicate
adjective underlined.
Examples
– During the storm (subject), driving became
(linking/intransitive verb) difficult (predicate
adjective).
– Her performance was phenomenal.
