Predicate Nouns/Pronouns/Adjectives 7th Grade Language Arts What’s a predicate??? • The part of a sentence that expresses what is said about the subject. • Is usually defined as a word group that comes after the subject to complete the meaning of the sentence. • It may be just a single word, the verb. • It may be a word group made up of a main verb and any helping verbs (VERB PHRASE). Predicate Noun • Also called a predicate nominative OR a completer, or complement, because it completes the verb. • It’s a single noun or a noun phrase that renames the subject of a sentence and follows a form of the verb “to be” or another linking verb. Examples 1. Mr. Smith (subject) is (linking verb) a doctor (predicate noun). 2. My son became a professional soccer player. 1. SUBJECT2. LINKING VERB3. PREDICATE NOUN- Predicate Pronoun • A word that is used in place of a subject noun. It only appears after a linking verb. • Examples of predicate pronouns are: – him, her, you, me, it, us, them Examples 1. Today, the teacher (subject) will be (linking verb) you (predicate pronoun). 1. The group is them. 1. SUBJECT2. LINKING VERB3. PREDICATE PRONOUN- Predicate Adjectives • A predicate adjective is very similar to a predicate noun in that it completes the predicate and follows an intransitive/linking verb. • Instead of renaming the subject, it modifies it. Here are some sentences with the predicate adjective underlined. Examples – During the storm (subject), driving became (linking/intransitive verb) difficult (predicate adjective). – Her performance was phenomenal. • SUBJECT• VERB• PREDICATE ADJECTIVE- – Oranges are juicy. • SUBJECT• VERB• PREDICATE ADJECTIVE-
