From Us to You Sharing Ideas Across the Synod ACTIVITY/OCCASION: Women of the ELCA December Meeting WHAT WE DID: Played "Name that Tune" and closed with a worship service WHAT PROMPTED THIS ACTIVITY: Each year I am asked to have the December program. WHAT WE HOPED TO ACCOMPLISH/WHAT WE ACTUALLY ACCOMPLISHED: I wanted the program to be "fun," but also wanted to close with a devotional time together. WHAT RESOURCES WERE DEVELOPED? Questions for three rounds of "Name that Tune." The first round was to add missing words to Christmas Carols (they had the most trouble with this round). The second round was to name a tune that I would play. The final round was "Bid a Note" where I gave them a clue and they bid how few notes they could name it in. I had them divided into two teams for this and we did not keep score. The numbers on the page are from a book we have, "Carols Old and New." The worship service is from Creative Worship for the Lutheran Parish and is copyrighted. I added Scripture to this service but the rest of it is the copyrighted service (would need permission from Concordia Publishing House, 3558 South Jefferson Avenue, Saint Louis, Missouri 63118-3968 to use). I had members of the Women of the ELCA to read the Scripture and to be lector 1 and Lector 2. WHAT COSTS WERE INVOLVED: copy costs only SUGGESTIONS FOR OTHERS: Worked well. I would choose easier carols for some of the ones used in Part 1. Also the last one in "Name that Tune" was one that our choir was working on and no one but choir members knew it. FILL IN THE MISSING WORDS 1. Add five words Love came down at Christmas love all lovely, love divine 2. Add 7 words From heav'n above to earth I come, to bring good news to everyone. Glad tidings of great joy I bring to all the world, and gladly sing 3. Add 5 words God rest you merry, gentlemen, let nothing you dismay, for Jesus Christ our Savior was born on Christmas Day 4. Add 5 words Good King Wenceslas looked out on the feast of Stephen 5. Add 6 words It came upon the midnight clear that glorious song of old, from angels bending near the earth to touch their harps of gold 6. Add 4 words While shepherds watched their flocks by night all seated on the ground, the angel of the Lord came down and glory shown around NAME THAT TUNE! 1. #42 - I Wonder As I Wander 2. #44 - O Come, All Ye Faithful 3. #52 - Child in the Manger 4. #57 - What Child is This? 5. #59 - Hark, the Herald Angels Sing 6. LBW #53 - Cold December Flies Away BID A NOTE! 1. This Christmas Carol is a real Ding Dong! #62 - Ding Dong! Merrily on High 2. This is a Polish Carol that proclaims "Christ the babe is Lord of all" #63 - Infant Holy, Infant Lowly 3. We Lutherans, as great wise men, would argue this is really an Epiphany hymn #68 - We Three Kings 4. One of the most beloved Christmas Carols #79 - Silent Night 5. My favorite line from it is "leading onward, beaming bright!" #81 - As With Gladness Men of Old 6. Refrains repeats one word in the title 4 times #91- The First Nowell 7. Very traditional ending, but you won't find it in the LBW #100 - We Wish You a Merry Christmas
