ARCHETYPES
Definition: Characters or situations and events that are repeated across most
literature in most cultures and societies. In Greek, the word means “original
model”.
Most Common Archetypes found in literature and film:

Supernatural
Intervention
Magic Weapon
The Hero
The Initiate
Mentor
DEFINITION
The search for someone or
something; if found, the
society will be brought back to
its glory.
The hero goes in search of
truth. While on this journey, he
descends to an unimaginable low
which forces him to accept
responsibility and return home.
From the Bible story of Adam
and Eve. There is a fall from
grace or high power which is
usually a form of punishment.
The battle between two
opposite forces. Society usually
believes good will always
triumph over evil.
A higher power, the gods in
Greek mythology, usually
intervenes to help the hero.
A magical object which helps
fight evil.
Unusual birth; his life is
threatened at an early age;
raised with foster parents;
rises to power; must right
wrongs; marries a princess and
dies a hero’s death
Young heroes or heroines who
go through training of some
sort; innocent
A counselor to the initiate. He
offers guidance to the one in
training.
EXAMPLE
Group of Companions
The Villain/ Evil Figure
Creature of Nightmare
A group who travel with the
hero or initiate and will do
anything to protect each other.
Evil incarnate; offers fame or
fortune to the hero in
exchange for something
valuable.
The monster who is the
antagonist in the story.
