archetype
 an image, a descriptive detail, a plot pattern, or a character type that occurs
frequently in literature, myth, religion or folklore
 the word archetype is derived from the Greek: arche, original, and typos, form
or model; thus, original model
symbol
 a concrete object used to represent an abstract idea
the hero
 man or woman of great courage and strength
 known for having honorable purposes; characterized by self-sacrifice
 is willing to endure hardship and even risk hi/her life for the good of all
 often leaves the familiar to enter a new, unfamiliar challenging world, and then
returns to his/her ordinary world
 frequently some attempt is made to kill him/her at birth; he/she is spirited
away and reared by foster parents
the initiate
 young hero or heroine who must endure some training and/or ceremony before
the quest
 often wear white and are innocent
the mentor
 counselor/teacher of the hero
 older and wiser
 gives the hero helpful gifts such as weapons, food, magic, information
 serves as a role model for the hero
 can serve as the hero's conscience
the herald
 announces the challenge which begins the hero's journey
 can be a person or piece of information
 upsets the balance of the hero's world
the task
 the action which the hero must perform
 a nearly superhuman deed that must be performed by the hero only
the quest
 the search for someone or some talisman which when found and brought back
will restore peace, order, and/or normalcy to a troubled land
the magic weapon
 symbolizes the extraordinary quality of the hero
 no one else can use the weapon or use it to its fullest potential
 usually given to the hero by a mentor figure
