Questions:
1. What is DNA?
Is a very large, long molecule. It contains all the genetic instructions to create an organism.
2. What does it do? It is a set of instructions for how to build and run every part of an organism.
3. What are the six basic elements found in the body?
CHNOPS – Carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, oxygen, phosphorus, sulfur- These elements join together to
form molecules. The elements in CHNOPS make up the sugar, phosphate and nitrogen bases that are
used to create DNA.
Vocabulary:
Deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA)- a molecule containing an organism’s genetic material
Nucleotide- molecules made of a nitrogen base, a sugar and a phosphate group
Sugar- a molecule that is part of a nucleotide
Phosphate- a molecule that is part of a nucleotide
Double helix- the shape of a DNA molecule. It looks like a twisted ladder (spiral staircase)
Nitrogen bases: Four different molecules that contain nitrogen
