Read and answer questions below. Shielding effect: Decrease in attraction between electron and positive nucleus
due to the addition of energy levels, electrons further away from the nucleus have less attraction to the positive
nucleus. Atoms and ions get bigger as you go down the columns because the shielding effect outweighs the effects of
the nuclear charge, so the attraction between the nucleus and electrons is weaker and the atom expands in size. In
contrast, atoms get smaller as you go across the periods because the nuclear charge effect outweighs the shielding
effect, so the attraction between the nucleus and the electron is greater and the atom shrinks in size. Shielding actually
reduces ionization energy. Electrons form shells around an atomic nucleus. The inner electrons shells shield the outer
electrons shells and reduce the effect of the nuclear "pull" on those outer electrons. The shielding provided by the inner
electrons means it will take less energy to free outer electrons from their orbitals, and thus the ionization energy of an
outer electron is reduced by the effects of shielding.
Write true or false for each statement.
_____15. Ionization energy increases across a period because of shielding.
____ 16. Atomic radii decreases across a period because of shielding.
____17. Atomic radii increases down a family because of shielding.
_____18.Ionization energy decreases down a family because of shielding.
_____19. New protons are added as atomic number increases in a period, therefore this increases the attractive force
between the nucleus and the electrons making the atomic radii decrease.
20. Circle which atom has the larger atomic radius of the pair: a. Cs and Li
b. Ne and F
c. O and Po
True or False: If false, write the correct answer.
______21.The modern periodic table arranges elements by atomic mass.
______22. There are 9 periods on the periodic table.
______23. There are 8 labeled groups on the periodic table.
______24. There are 2 elements in the first period of the periodic table.
