European Space Agency Update IGBP IPO Meeting 16 Jan 2013 European Space Agency Update ESA Activities • Climate Change Initiative Programme • Earth Observation in IPCC AR5 • Living Planet Symposium Joint ESA-IGBP projects Funding Opportunties • Budget to support the participation of IGBP scientists in ESA meetings/events. • Budget to exploit and promote ESA data. Merton Initiative? Climate Change Initiative Responded to the need from the scientific community for satellite data that are: • Merged (i.e. more than just ESA data) • Stable (no jumps from change in sensors) • Error characterised (information on uncertainty is included) • Accessible (free to obtain, will have a central CCI interface, documentation online) • Cover as long time period as possible • Consistent data products between the 13 Essential Climate Variable projects • Harmonised data formats (all using NetCDF CF compliant) • Climate Modelling User Group advise the projects on the needs of the modelling community. • Prototype data sets available Spring 2013 – we need help validating them! www.esa-cci.org Compiling a CCI data product Scatterometer ERS-1 ERS-2 Ascat-A … Ascat-B The Soil Moisture Radiometer Fundamental Climate Data Record Nimbus 7 SMMR (FCDR) DMSP SSM/I TRMM TMI AQUA AMSR-E Coriolis Windsat etc… … SMOS SMAP Soil Moisture ECV Production System Incorporating new satellite data, reprocessing & algorithm evaluation ECV Data Product CCI Phase 1 products temporal extent Aerosol Cloud GHGs Ozone Ocean Colour Land Cover Fire Sea-Level SST Glaciers Ice-Sheets Sea-Ice Soil-Moisture 1970s 1980s 1990s 2000s 2010s Coordination with international actions on climate research TBD GHRSST IOCCG GEWEX SST cloud AEROCOM sea ice ocean colour aerosol sea-level ozone IO3C OSTWG Climate Modeling cmug GHGs Community CMIP5 land cover MACC/GCP glaciers soil moisture fire GOFC/GOLD ice sheets GTN-G GOFC/GOLD Fire / GCP GEWEX IMBIE CCI links with IGBP Using the CCI products within IGBP/Future Earth: - Global assessments, e.g. Global Carbon Atlas, Atmosphere/Biosphere index? - Model/data comparisons and benchmarking. List of models within IGBP and proposed working group will be useful - Trend analysis and detection & attribution studies - Will be emailing projects individually to see where feedback on the CCI can be gained. (I will write articles for your newsletters!) ESA Activities • IPCC AR5 – where does Earth Observation data contribute and where could it be improved? Upcoming projects: • GlobCurrent – aims to promote a wider use of ocean surface current measurements • • • • derived from all existing remote sensing sources & demonstrate the feasibility of a unified service for ocean surface currents. Sentinel2Agriculture - validated algorithms and best practices to produce EO products for agriculture monitoring, preparing for the exploitation of Sentinel2 observations. GlobTemperature – improving the uptake of global-scale satellite land surface temperature information by the broad research and operational user communities. Potential ideas include user driven LST product development and processing, validation, intercomparison and quality assessment, in-situ - model - satellite data merging, construction of an LST information portal, etc GlobBiomass - aims to provide a better characterisation of the distribution, and changes of regional and global biomass, as well as improved quantification metrics, to help reduce uncertainties carbon stock calculations and fluxes in the terrestrial biosphere. Cryosat – innovative scientific applications of Cryosat data in the cryosphere domain beyond its primary mission ESA Activities • IGBP community encouraged to attend (funding available) • Call for abstracts, deadline 15 February 2013. • Presenting joint projects and current ESA initiatives to engage with the global change research community. • Future Earth exhibition stand? Joint ESA – IGBP projects Funded through ESA programmes: 1. Science to Support Element (fundamental science) 2. Data User Element (demonstrator projects for a service, e.g. permafrost monitoring) Current projects: • SOLAS – Oceanflux. €1m split over 3 projects on greenhouse gases, upwelling and sea spray & aerosols. • iLEAPS – ALANIS. €1m split over 3 projects, finished in 2012, preparing ALANIS-2. • GCP – Carbonflux TBD. • Diversity II – €1m for one project on monitoring biodiversity • Open to all ideas but must use ESA data and be run by ESA member states. Common projects are reprocessing EO data to make it compatible with models. e.g. IGAC’s biomass burning project, LOICZ delta flooding maps. • Want to put together ‘Initial Science Requirements’ from each project. Funding Opportunities Participation of key IGBP scientific experts in meetings organised or supported by ESA. €30,000 annually • Living Planet Symposium coming up. 9-13 September, 2013, Edinburgh. SSC members with an expertise in remote sensing? • Will email lists of upcoming meetings to projects, e.g. Earth Explorer user consultations Promote ESA EO science results and global data products to the non-EO expert global change research community. €30,000 annually • Data visualisations • Events, e.g. hackathon – IGBP defined scope & audience, ESA data products, based at Harwell. • Use of ESA data in global assessments/IGBP climate change index – where small data reprocessing may be needed? Merton Initiative? Good overview of where we’d like to be. • Follow up activity to determine where we should focus our efforts, what are the next achievable steps towards these overarching aims? • Do we need a workshop/project between EO and social scientists like we’ve organised between modellers and the observation community? • Is there a problem with data compatibility or access? • Follow up this idea: ‘Identification of important Earth System regions where lack of observations contributes to critical uncertainty should be formalized’. • Reduce the overview down to a list of aims that are achievable within the next 3-5 years? • Focus the Questions and Key Requirements down to be audience specific - need to know who you’re developing this system for. • Appendix B – can we use this to develop small, collaborative projects between two or more of these that would contribute to one of the goals expressed in the document? • Some are being answered through the CCI – integration of space & ground based data; data harmonisation; detection & attribution. ESA credit! Thank You!
