Body Systems and Your Health Read page 154-155 Are you anemic – deficient in iron? BLM 2-28 Blood components and their functions Plasma is the liquid portion of blood, and it carries nutrients, waste products (CO2), hormones and blood cells to and from cells. Red blood cells contain hemoglobin, which attracts oxygen and carries oxygen to the cells. White blood cells defend the body against infection and disease (some types engulf “foreign” invaders such as bacteria). Platelets are responsible for the initial stages of blood clotting A Healthy Circulatory System Disorders of the circulatory system are the leading cause of death in North America. One of the most common is high blood pressure. See poster and model. Read anemia in “Biology of ourselves” Blood Pressure A sphygmomanometer is used to measure blood pressure. This device determines: - the volume of blood – if you lost a lot of blood, you will have low blood pressure. - the heart rate – a fast heart beat pushes blood rapidly through the arteries, building up blood pressure. - artery size - small, narrow, or partly clogged arteries produce high blood pressure. - artery elasticity – loss of elasticity results in hardening of the arteries producing higher blood pressure. - blood viscosity – thicker blood (higher ratio of RBC to plasma) flows slower Avoiding disorders/problems of the circulatory system: Choose a healthy lifestyle: Don’t smoke Eat a proper diet Get regular exercise Read page 157. Disorders of the Digestive System What would you rather eat and why. 1)Chesseburger, fries, soft drink, onion rings, ice cream 2) Roast chicken sandwich, carrot, celery sticks, cherry tomatoes, juice, low-fat yogurt How many times have you seen that highfat meal advertised in comparison to the low-fat lunch? A lot of money goes into advertising to persuade people to buy fast foods. It is ironic that at a time in history when we have products available year-round from every corner of the world; when there are magazines, television shows, web sites, etc. devoted to food and exotic recipes; when large numbers of people have generous disposable incomes – still the North American population, particularly the young people, are not as well-nourished as might be expected. Our society seems to be encouraged to have little respect for food. We regard it as a “fun” item, and advertising the latest “kid” meal at the local fast food outlet, with various media-linked toys that come with it. From an early age, many children become accustomed to a high-fat, high-sugar, low-fibre, lownutrient diet. For an alarming number of people, this is a typical diet. Many people seem unable to make the connection between what they eat and the way their bodies perform. A poor diet can lead to serious disorders of the digestive system, but it can also detract from an overall sense of well-being, energy loss, poor hair and skin tone, and a feeling of tiredness. Read pages 158-159 A Healthy Respiratory System Read page 160 Smoking, air pollution, and industrial byproducts such as coal dust are related to disorders of the respiratory system. What do you think about government advertising against smoking? Does it work or not? How could you improve the advertising?
