Analyzing propaganda
1.
From this picture, most of the people in the world recognize the Chinese characters and Mao’s
portrait. We can see Mao is surrounded by sunflowers in the front and a big shining Sun in the
background. The structure of the picture is very simple, but it reveals the theme even without
understanding the words.
People might have a little knowledge of Mao who had been idolized in China in his lifetime. So it
is easy to understand from the picture that he was related to a rising Sun which lighted up the
who country with its existence.
2.
This is a Japanese propaganda poster during WWII when they invaded to China and occupied
Manchuria and intended to expand further through the whole country. The three figures are: a
woman is representing the Manchuria by holding the flag of Manchu, the middle man is holding
a Japanese flag to represent Japan and the right person is representing Madarin Chinese. The
salient feature of the picture is that the two people are holding the arms of the Japanese which
passes the message of it: Manchu and China succumb to Japan to be united as a whole. So
people could be happy with peace as shown on their faces.
