Build-An-Organelle Project Project Introduction: The compartments of the cell that we call organelles are vitally important for life. For this project, the classroom is our cell and you will be building an organelle to go inside our cell. You will use construction paper, glue, and other materials approved by your teacher to construct your organelle. You will also give a 5 minute group presentation about an organelle. Include the important role your organelle has in the class as well as other interesting facts that you think are important for your classmates to know. You must also include a short fact sheet with enough copies for your whole class. Refer to the attached rubric to learn how you will be graded. Groups: 2-3 people per group Ideas for information that you might include. Some of this information may not be available for your organelle; this list is just to give you ideas of things to look for: The job your organelle does for the cell Size and shape What types of cells contain your organelle Compartments within your organelle How your organelle forms What your organelle is made of Inheritance of your organelle Other organelles that partner with yours Chemical reactions that happen in or on your organelle Medical information, diseases that result from malfunction of your organelle Organelles that groups will be assigned to: Mitochondria Chloroplast Ribosome Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum Golgi Lysosomes Vesicles Cilia/Flagella Centrioles Cytoskeleton Your organelle: _________________________________________________________ Your presentation date: ___________________________________________________ Your group members: ____________________________________________________ Group Member Names: ________________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________________________________ Grading Rubric: Organelle Fact Sheet Excellent (10) copied for all classmates and one for your teacher; clearly typed list of facts about your organelle, no inaccuracies size is roughly to scale Organelle Construction with the classroom, clear labels on all relevant parts of the organelle Organelle Creativity creative use of materials, design shows effort and an excellent understanding of how organelle functions Organelle Presentation (x2) all members of group speak equally; clear knowledgeable explanation of your organelle’s structure and function and how they relate to each other, group members do not read directly from notes but only use notes as their guide Total = ____________/50 Good (8) copied for all classmates and one for your teacher; clearly typed list of facts about your organelle, one inaccuracy size is roughly to scale with the classroom, mostly clear labels on most relevant parts of the organelle creative use of materials, design shows some effort and a good understanding of how organelle functions any 1 of the 4 criteria in the excellent category are not true Fair (7) copied for all classmates and one for your teacher; handwritten list of facts about your organelle OR a few inaccuracies size is not at all to scale with the classroom, mostly clear labels on most relevant parts of the organelle creative use of materials, design shows some effort and a fair understanding of how organelle functions any 2 of the 4 criteria in the excellent category are not true Poor (5) NOT copied for all classmates and one for your teacher; handwritten list with more than a few inaccuracies size is not at all to scale with the classroom, unclear labels on most relevant parts of the organelle creative use of materials, design shows little effort or a poor understanding of how organelle functions any 3 of the 4 criteria in the excellent category are not true
