Homework #2
Human Vision System
Due: February 11 (Friday COB)
Instructions: Complete the following problems showing all work. Please write as legibly
as possible. If your handwriting is a problem use a text editor.
1. a. Write down the lens equation. b. Under what condition is the focal length equal
to z’ ( distance of image plane from optical origin)?
2. Define the following:
a. Optical origin
b. Center of projection
c. Line of sight
d. Image plane
3. Draw a diagram to illustrate the definitions from 2.
4. When diagramming the optical system, the image plane can be projected in front
of the optical origin, what would be the purpose of this? How far in front of the
optical origin is the image plane?
5. Give the two equations that map the scene point to the image plane. (hint x’ , y’)
6. Compute the focal length for a scene point (0.8, 0.5,0.3) given the image plane
point (.018,.01125). (hint scene point (x,y,z), image point (x’,y’))
7. What is the image plane height of an object whose scene height is 2m, scene
distance (z) is 10m, and focal length is 15mm?
8. What five factors affect spatial resolution?
9. If the pixels are 5um square and pixel spacing is 7um, what is the spatial
resolution limit? (um – micrometer)
10. How does are larger aperture affect the depth of field?
11. How does a larger aperture affect the light contacting the image plane?
12. Calculate the depth of field is the imaging element is 4.6 um, focal length =
35mm, the scene point is 10 m from camera lens, and iris diameter 12mm.
