Review of Previous Meeting Minutes
The minutes of the July 21, 2008 meeting were reviewed and approved unanimously without comment of
amendment.
Old & New Business
Welcome, New Committee Member (s) and/or Staff Introductions:
Dr. Stephen Grubbs opened the meeting with an introduction of Dr. Estelle Whitney, GYN followed by an around the
table introduction.
Screening for Life, SFL: Review of Breast Cancer Algorithm:
Ms. Katherine Hughes informed the committee that Ms. Karen Savin was not able to attend the meeting, however
she provided her with insight as to why she chose the breast cancer algorithm from California. Ms. Hughes informed
the group that the California guidelines were selected; because Ms. Savin felt that they were the most
comprehensive, Screening for Life (SFL) is open to any suggestions that the Committee has. Ms. Nora Katurakes
reminded everyone that the EP& D committee has accepted the responsibility to be the mandated medical advisory
for SFL so it is critical that which ever guidelines is used is accurate.
Ms. Katurakes expressed concern that approving the use of California’s algorithm for breast cancer would set a bad
precedent for the screening guidelines that selected for prostrate, cervical and colon cancers. Some committee
members stated that it was imperative to use screening guidelines that are continually reviewed and updated, but
that also have broad guidelines.
Dr. Stephen Grubbs suggested selecting volunteers to see what the breast centers are currently using, what the
NCCN guidelines are and are all harmonious to one another. Vickie Cooke will be in charge of doing the review with
Ms. Katurakes help. Dr. Grubbs would also like the committee to ask Emily Pendon to suggest possible guidelines
that could be adapted.
Dr. Estelle Whitney informed the committee that the ASCCP Guidelines algorithm is used for cervical.
There was a brief discussion on genetic testing.
Expansion of the Woman’s Mobile Health Screening Services:
Ms. Hughes informed that committee that work has begun on Goal 4. A pilot cervical cancer screening program
began on July 1, 2008. A .50 Full- time Equivalent Nurse Practitioner from Planned Parenthood has been tapped to
perform Pap tests on the mobile cancer screening van. In the month of July ten women were screened for cervical
cancer. The goal for the year is to have 40 women screened.
The targeted population for the cervical cancer program is women 40 years of age and older. The committee
questioned whether HPV testing was being conducted. Ms. Hughes stated that she did not have information on HPV
testing, but that she would check with Ms. Savin from Screening for Life and report back to the group.
Dr. Grubbs requested a small presentation to the committee on the mobile health van. Ms. Hughes stated that she
would arrange for Ms. Carmen Herrera or Ms. Savin to attend the next committee meeting.
Prostate Screening Outreach:
The committee discussed several potential models for prostate screening outreach including the barbershop
campaign and mind body and soul. Dr. Grubbs informed the group that several years ago he was involved in an
effort to implement the barbershop campaign in Delaware, however many barriers arose. The main barrier that they
encountered was that there was a high rate of unlicensed barbershops statewide, and they were only able to work
with licensed barbershops. Many of the shop owners were sharing licenses.
Mr. Mike Cordrey from Aloysius Butler and Clark (AB&C) presented three concepts for a prostate campaign to the
committee.
The committee discussed what the call to action for the campaign should be. Currently the major barrier to getting
men screened for prostrate cancer is the digital rectal exam (DRE). However, Dr. Grubbs expressed cancer that
having a prostate specific antigen (PSA) number would give men a false sense of security.
If PSA is the lead-in to capture the targeted population then that result should be sent back to a physician who will
then ensure that the patient receives the DRE. Dr. Grubbs explained that there are low producing PSA prostrate
cancers so the DRE is critical component screening.
Turning Delaware Hot Pink
Ms. Jo Wardell stated that the ACS is pushing for all 3 counties in Delaware to “go pink” in an attempt to increase
breast cancer screening awareness. Information was distributed to committee members that detailed ways business
could “go pink”.
Review of FY08 Accomplishments for the Purple Book:
Ms. Hughes presented a power point presentation that outlined the Early Detection and Prevention Committee’s
accomplishments during Fiscal Year 2008. Dr. Grubbs requested that screening numbers and specific data be
included in the report to show the depth of the committee’s accomplishments.
Subcommittee Update:
Dr. Grubbs requested the colorectal mortality data as soon as it is available. He advised the committee of the
upcoming cancer symposiums at Christiana Care and at Beebe.
Ms. Nora Katurakes informed the group that the Communication and Public Education Committee was holding a
seminar on “Understanding Delaware’s Cancer Data”.
Dr. Grubbs questioned if all new members have been signed up. Ms. Hughes advised some applications are still
being processed.
The meeting was adjourned.
