D – 3 Plants Vocabulary List transpiration – The movement of water vapor out of a plant and into the air. vascular system – Long, tube-like tissues in plants through which water and nutrients move from one part of the plant to another. (xylem up; phloem down) seed – A plant embryo that is enclosed in a protective coating and has its own source nutrients. embryo – A multicellular organism, plant or animal, in its earliest stages of development. germination – The beginning of growth of a new plant from a spore or a seed. pollen – Tiny multicellular grains that contain the underdeveloped sperm cells of a plant. gymnosperm – A plant that produces seeds that are not enclosed in flowers or fruit. (Christmas trees!) angiosperm – A plant that has flowers and produces seeds enclosed in fruit. (apple & pear trees) flower – The reproductive structure of an angiosperm, containing male and female parts. fruit – The ripened ovary of a flowering plant that contains seeds. xylem – (UP) – A vascular tissue that carries water and dissolved nutrients up from the roots of a plant. phloem – (DOWN) - A vascular tissue that transports energy and materials (glucose) down from the leaves of a plant. perennials – Plants that come back every year. (Dandelions) annuals – Plants that need to be re-planted every year since these types of plants have a life cycle of only one year. (Corn, peas, pumpkins)
