Atmosphere Review Answers
1. Conduction- Transfer of heat through direct contact or molecules bumping into one
another.
Radiation- transfer of heat through rays or waves
Convection- transfer of heat through the flow of liquids or gases
2. The sun
3. The Coriolis Effect is when objects travel a curved path. This is caused by Earth’s
rotation.
4. Troposphere- Decreases Stratosphere- Increases Mesosphere- Decreases
Thermosphere- increases
5. Pressure decreases as you move upward through the atmosphere
6. Air pressure is caused by gravity and is measured by the number of air molecules in
a given space.
7. The ozone is located mostly in the stratosphere and slightly in the Mesosphere.
8. The ozone layer protects Earth from the sun’s harmful radiation
9. From outermost to inner- Exosphere, Thermosphere, Mesosphere, Stratosphere,
Troposphere.
10.
Types of winds:
Doldrums- located along the equator
Trade- from the equator to 30 degrees.
Westerlies- Located from 30 degrees to 60 degrees
Polar Easterlies- Located from 60 degrees to the poles
11. Westerlies affect US and Canada
12. Air pressure is less at high elevations because there are less air molecules.
13. The Earth’s atmosphere is made of 78% Nitrogen, 21% Oxygen, and 1% other
gases.
14. Water cycle has 4 steps. Precipitation, Evaporation, Condensation, and Run off.
15. Cold air has a higher pressure than warm air because the molecules are closer
together than in hot air.
16. Energy from the sun is either absorbed by the Earth’s land and water, absorbed by
the atmosphere, or deflected by the atmosphere.
17. Because of Earths tilt and the curved surface of Earth.
18. Chloroflourocarbons or CFCs
