Unit Three
Age of Empires
The Big Idea!
As we saw at the end of our River Cities unit, humans first independent civilizations
were eventually absorbed into larger civilizations where multiple peoples and cities were
ruled by one powerful centralized government. This was the beginning of the Age of
Empires. A dynasty of rulers would lay claim to an area of land and all the people in it.
They would establish government systems, religious beliefs, technologies and arts to help
them overcome the challenges within their empire. Then another group, with better
technology, or more motivating beliefs would come in and take them over. Although the
transition from one empire to another was often violent and destructive, over time
peoples’ lives became better off. That’s because each new conquering group would make
improvements to the government, beliefs, arts and technology of the previous group.
Your task will be to track 4 Empires in one region of the world and note
the changes made to government, religion, technology, and/or arts in
that region so that you can answer this Thesis Question:
Is having your civilization
conquered by another group
a beneficial or harmful
thing?
Oh, and did I mention you have 5 class periods to do it?
Day One: Pre Read 2 packets: In this unit I want you to continue to learn about the
advancements of civilization in the Middle East and Europe. But, I also want you to
explore cultures that were developing in other parts of the world like China, India, and
America. So I want everyone to read the Middle Eastern Empire packet, but the second
one is your choice of India, China or America. Which ever one you think you might be
interested in. Your first step is to just read both packets over so that you get an idea of
what is in each packet.
Choose a Region: Now that you have read both packets you have to decide which one
you will write an essay about and which one you will do an oral report project. First we
are going to focus on the essay. So, the region that you want to do a project on can
just be put aside for a week.

Day Two: Use the note taking template attached to this packet to take notes on the
Government, Religion, Technology and Arts of each Empire in your packet. This is just
like you did with Egypt, instead of 3 Kingdoms you are doing each Empire. Also the
Egypt reading was 16 pages of info, and these are only 10 pages. Do as much as you
can in class, finish for homework.
Citations: To help us get to the point where we can cite our references for a paper, on
this assignment I want your notes to be annotated. That means I will show you how to
keep track of what notes on your outline came from what source. I have included
instruction sheets on writing bibliographies and footnotes.
Day Three: 2nd Resource: After filling in your note sheet from your first packet, you will
notice that there are certain topics that you don’t have a lot of detail about. So, you need
to find new resources with additional information to fill in the gaps. This class will be
devoted to looking at other resource books. I have provided you with a list of books and
page numbers to make the process easier for you.
Topics: With only 3 days to take notes and 1 day to write, you may not have enough
time to find out about every topic (Gov, Rel, Art, Tech) for every empire. So, only do as
many as you think you can tackle. The more you do the higher your grade, but be
realistic. Maybe you just want to focus this paper and research on talking about how
each empire changed their government or their art.
Day Four: 3rd Resources. Last class you hit some additional resource and pulled
out anything you didn’t already have. You should have noticed that it went
quicker, because you already knew 90% of what you reading. But, you’ll notice
that you still have topics that don’t have a ton of detail. So now we have to do a
more specific search. Time to hit the world wide web. This time, do specific
searches for the specific topic you are looking for. If you need more detail on
Mayan Art, search for “Mayan Art” – not just “Mayans”
When you find a good web resource, either save it as a word document, or print it
out. Don’t just start taking notes. The idea is that you are collecting resources to
take with you. You are going to be given limited time in the lab to collect these
resources. Get them! Come back, then start scanning through them for more
details. Finish going over them for homework.
Day 5: Write the Essay! Now it’s time to write it all up. This is no different
than you have done for your Egypt essay. We will take some time to go over
together how to set up your outline and some context and conclusion ideas.
Then its off to write it up. You can hand write or type. Whatever is easier.
Footnotes: Depending on how this is going, I will show you how to cite
information in your paper. Stay tune for further instructions.
