September 17, 2008 SUMMARY OF REQUIREMENTS The following is a brief summary of the new and revised paragraphs in the Standard for Safety, Luminaires, UL 1598, Edition 3. Those that require action to determine compliance have a future Effective Date of September 17, 2010 and those that require no action are effective on the date of publication. Paragraphs 6.14.1.1, 17.2 General Subject and Comment Bonding circuit efficacy determined by resistance measurement. If greater than 0.10 ohm then Bonding impedance test required. No action required, revisions clarify current practice. 18.2.1.4, 5.7.1.7, 6.14.2.10, 6.14.3.1, 6.14.3.2, 6.14.3.3, 16.16.3, 16.17.2 Correction of Clause references, no action required. 6.13.2.5, 16.38 Manufacturers of luminaires with the lampholder leads accessible with the luminaire fully assembled must submit them to determine compliance with the Lampholder Lead Pull test. 7.2.3.3 Restores the first edition requirement inadvertently omitted in the second edition of UL1598. No action required, current practice. 5.10.12 Manufacturers of luminaires with decorative parts secured by friction or adhesive alone must submit them for testing. 6.9.4 Permits conductors smaller than 24 AWG under specified conditions. No action required, less stringent requirement. 12.2.3.2.2 Corrects dimensions of the test pan. No action required. 8.6.6 Adds specified marking for luminaires with germicidal lamps. Current practice, no action required. 10.4.3 Permits open holes without baffles under specified conditions in electrical enclosures that house electrical components. No action required, less stringent requirement. 6.14.2.9, 16.39, 18.6 Adds ground screw torque test. Requires production line testing and record keeping. 9.4.1.1, 9.4.2.1 Revises marking to incorporate new ANSI lamp codes identifying MH lamps that comply with the UV limits in ANSI 78.380 . Requires report revision to reflect new markings. 6.15.1.1(g), 11.3.12, 16.40 Adds cable pull test for luminaire wiring compartments with integral strain relief clamps. No action required, current practice. 11.7.1.12 Adds marked spacing canopy luminaire temperature test. No action required, restores a test that was inadvertently omitted. Table 14.1.2, Item 22 Adds minimum temperature limit for thermoplastic fluorescent lampholder and correlates it with UL496. No action required, current practice is to limit to the material RTI. Subject: 1598 Paragraphs Page 2 of 2 September 17, 2008 General Subject and Comment 12.2.4.6 Corrects terminology in air-handling luminaire marking. Manufacturers of air-handling luminaires will need to have their report updated to reflect this change. Table 19.8.2 Deletes obsolete test lamps. No action required, 10.2.5 (USA) Increases the weight limit for a wall-mounted luminaire solely supported by a junction box to 50 pounds. No action required, reverts back to Edition 1 of UL1598. 6.16.1 Deletes the minimum volume of a field-wiring compartment. No action, less stringent requirement. 14.1.5 Deletes the dielectric withstand test immediately following the temperature test. No action required. 11.8.6 Deletes suspended ceiling luminaires. No action required 19.10.1 Deletes construction detail for the temperature test ceiling & wall that has no impact on test results. No action required. 16.3.8 Revises five inch flame test pass / fail criteria to align with UL746C, making it more objective. No action required 8.8.1 Manufacturers of fluorescent luminaires with bi-pin lampholders and electronic instant-start ballasts will have to use either Type CC ballasts or lampholders marked with an āIā in a circle and have their files revised. 9.3.1 Revises marking to incorporate new ANSI lamp codes identifying MH lamps that comply with the lamp rupture criteria in ANSI 78.380. Requires report revision to reflect new markings. 10.3.13(CAN) Revision clarifies that requirement applies only to poles > 4m. No action required. 5.7.1.2 (c), 16.41 Adds sample conditioning that was inadvertently omitted from the impact test protocol to reflect current practice. No action required. Table 7.3.3.1 & Table 7.3.3.2 Moves the G8 lamp base configuration from the low voltage lamp base table to the line voltage table. No action required. 2; 5.8.1; Tables 6.9.2(USA) and 11.6.2.1(USA); Fig. 7.2.1.1; 11.8.5.2; 16.5.5.4; 16.21.2.1; 16.26.15; Table 19.3.3.1; Fig. 19.14.1.2; 19.14.3.1; Annex A Editorial revisions no action required. Multiple Mexico only requirements Editorial changes to clarify the intent of requirements for Mexico. No action required. 8.9(CAN) & 8.10(CAN) Manufacturers of fluorescent luminaires with bi-pin lampholders, intended for installation on branch circuits exceeding 150 V to ground Listed for Canada (cUL), need to inform UL how they intend to comply with the Canadian disconnect requirements. Compliance to be determined by the UL Field Rep at the next factory inspection
