Cindy, Ann & Bones – The Temple of Boom
Lesson 24
Produce a final version of the four-section diary of the hostage.
NB. Always save your annotated interactive whiteboard files.
Before the lesson - if possible, scan or take a photo of a child's draft from the previous lesson for use on
the whiteboard and paste it into the IWB file for group editing.
Introduction (15 minutes)
Invite children to read the feedback comments with a partner and talk about ways to improve their work from the
previous lesson. Use the scanned or photographed piece of work on the IWB to model how to edit a piece of
work following your class editing rules. Engage the class as a whole getting them to suggest improvements.

Does it make sense?
Is there a more descriptive word or phrase we can use?
Can we add detail to engage the reader even more?
Did they include something from their grammar focus?
Main (30 minutes)
Have the above bullet point check-list from the IWB file on the board. Pupils now re-write a final draft using the
edits and their own new ideas to improve their work.
Use mini plenaries if appropriate to allow for brain breaks during which you can get pupils to share good writing
or allow them to magpie each other's work. This extended writing time is an ideal opportunity for the teacher
and/or TA to check whether your grammar or sentence level focus is being used.
Plenary (15 minutes)
Assuming you have five groups, assign one part of the diary to each group and choose one person’s diary entry
within that group. Since there are four parts to the diary, one section will be covered twice by two separate
groups. Explain that each section will need a few images that give the audience a visual representation of the
diary voice-over.
Whoever’s writing has been chosen should read that section aloud to the rest of the group. As a group, think of a
few photographs that could be staged in order to visually describe that section of the diary. Get groups to
practise staging the images. Once they have decided on a their visuals, invite groups to share them with the rest
of the class and why they chose those particular visuals. This is a great exercise before recording and photo
taking in lesson 25.
