Brief course description:
Nomenclature, Aromaticity, Five-membered heterocycles: pyrrole, furan, thiophen
indole, diazoles Six-membered heterocycles: pyridine, quinoline &isoquinoline;
basicity; synthesis, reactions, cycloaddition reactions. Heterocyclic compounds
versus microbes: antibiotics, antitumors and as dyes. Biologically important
heterocycles, uracils, purins, Carbohydrates; definition, nomenclature,
classification, monosaccharide: absolute configuration, cyclic structures, oxidation,
reduction, osazones, ascorbic acid, amino sugars. Oligosaccharides and
polysaccharides; cellulose technology, Amino acids; proteins, natural amino acids:
properties, synthesis and reactions, synthesis of peptides, protein classification.
Lipids; classification, waxes, oils and fats (glycerides), synthesis and properties of
glycerides, glycolipids.

Detailed outline of lectures:
Introduction to heterocyclic chemistry
 Definition of H.C., natural sources, examples and importance.
Chap. 1: Aromaticity and hetrocyclic compounds:
 Criteria for aromaticity; aromatic and non aromatic heterocycles.
Chap. 2: Nomenclature of heterocyclic compounds
 Different methods of naming heterocyclic compounds: common nomenclature,
modified replacement nomenclature and Hantzsch Widman nomenclature (IUPAC)
 Nomenclature of fused heterocyclic compounds (benzofused heterocycles and two or
more fused heterocycles)
Chap. 3: 5-Membered heterocyclic compounds
 Synthesis and reactions of pyrrole furan, thiophene, indole, and diazoles (imidazole
and pyrazole)
Chap. 4: 6-Membered heterocyclic compounds
 Synthesis, reactions and basicity of pyridine, quinoline & isoquinoline, and diazines
(uracils and purins).Structure of nucleic acids (DNA & RNA).
Chap. 5: Carbohydrates
 Definition and classification.
 Monosaccharide: nomenclature, examples, stereochemistry, different methods of
drawing of monosaccharide, physical properties, chemical properties: oxidation,
reduction, glycosides formation, ether formation, ester formation, osazones, degradation
and synthesis.
 Structure, properties and importance of di, oligo and polysaccharides.
Chap 6: Amino acids and proteins
 Naturally occurring amino acids: classification, properties, configuration, synthesis and
reactions.
 Synthesis of peptides and protein
Chap 7: Lipids and fatty acids
 Structure and main characteristics of fatty acids
 Classification of lipids: waxes, oils and fats (triglycerides).
 Synthesis and properties of triglycerids and glycolipides.

Throughout the course we categorized and accumulated concepts for
review such as:
Meaning and criteria for aromaticity, electronic configuration, hybridization
(sp2 & sp3) , resonance, electronegativity, basicity, acidity, electrophile,
nucleophile, major reactions of carbonyl group & substitution reaction ,
addition reactions, cycloaddition reactions, hydrogen bonding and its effects on
physical properties, isomers, chiral carbons.

Evaluation: Assignments: There will be a total of 4 assignments handed out
throughout the semester. They will be due one week from the day they are
handed out, at the end of class. Late assignments will not be accepted.
The top 3 assignments will be counted.
Quizzes: There will be a total of 3 quizzes will be given throughout the
semester. The top 2 quizzes will be counted.
Midterm Exams: Mid 1 and Mid2 (1h)
Final Exam (3 hr) will cover material from the entire course

Notes: Any assignments, tests or exams written in pencil will not be eligible for
