Comparing Numbers
You can use a number line to help when comparing numbers. For any pair of numbers on
the number line, the number to the left is less than the number to the right.
Examples:
-13 is less than -6 because -13 is to the left of -5
We use the < (less than) symbol to write -10 < -5
+3 is greater than -8 because +3 is to the right of -8
We use the > (greater than) symbol to write +3 > -8

Write Numbers in Various Forms
Powers of 10:
Numbers like 10, 100, and 1,000 are called powers of 10. They can be written as
products of 10 or in exponential form. See the example for 1 million in the chart below.

Other Forms:
A number in scientific notation is written as a number (at least 1 and less than 10)
multiplied by a power of 10.
