Aimhigher Sussex Languages Project Resources Pack
This resources pack is the result of two years of work with secondary schools in Sussex to promote
the study of modern foreign languages. The resources are part of the Languages Project led by The
Open University in the South East in partnership with the Aimhigher Sussex office. All the activities
included in this pack have been delivered in schools and colleges and are the result of collaboration
with language departments, being based partly on their feedback.
The activities on this memory stick are organised by level. Each activity consists of a tutor guide, one
or more powerpoint presentations and classroom handouts. Some activities include flashcards and
there are also mp3’s for some.
1. KS3 tasters are aimed at encouraging KS3 students to choose to take up a language at KS3 and
into GCSE. They can also be used at different levels.
2000 words (French, Italian & Spanish). This activity is based on cognates and shows how
easily a large amount of the target language can be mastered very quickly. The activities can be
delivered in 20 – 30 minutes (or longer, if desired).
2. GCSE tasters are intended to give KS3 students an idea of the sort of thing to expect at GCSE
and to encourage them to take up the language at GCSE. They are in French, German, Italian and
Spanish.
Music & expressing opinions (French, German, Italian & Spanish). This activity enables
students to express opinions about music by listening to music and doing a survey. They include
some MP3’s.
Saying what you like (Italian). This activity teaches students how to say what they like.
Song (Italian). This activity teaches students a simple Italian song.
Sports (French, German, Italian & Spanish). This activity teaches students how to say which
sports and activities they like and how much they like them.
Telling the time & daily routine (French, German & Spanish). This activity teaches students
how to tell the time and talk about their daily routine.
3. GCSE revision is aimed at consolidating aspects of writing, reading or speaking appropriate to
GCSE. Some activities are multi-disciplinary and can be used to revise for more than one part of the
exam. They are in French and Spanish.
GCSE speaking & writing (French & Spanish). This activity uses four topic areas and a range
of grammatical structures to stimulate a wider range of speaking and writing, using a survey.
Verbs (French & Spanish). This resource is revision of verb tenses using a PowerPoint
presentation.
4. AS revision is aimed at consolidating aspects of writing, reading or speaking appropriate to AS.
Some activities are multi-disciplinary and can be used to revise for more than one part of the exam.
They are in French, German and Spanish.
AS speaking & writing (French, German & Spanish). This activity focuses on key topics of AS
syllabuses, encouraging students to use as wide a range of grammatical structures and expressions
as they can to write or speak about them.
5. A2 revision is aimed at consolidating aspects of writing, reading or speaking appropriate to A2.
Some activities are multi-disciplinary and can be used to revise for more than one part of the exam.
They are in French, German and Spanish.
A2 essay writing (French, German & Spanish). This activity aims to teach and review essay
writing skills.
A2 speaking & writing (French, German & Spanish). This activity aims to widen the
grammatical and structural range used by students when speaking and writing at A2.
6. Family language tasters are aimed at getting both parents/guardians and students excited
about and committed to learning languages. They demonstrate the importance and accessibility of
other languages.
Family language taster (French & Spanish). This activity focuses on how much of a foreign
language we already know or can easily pick up and on ordering food in a restaurant, having first
written the menu!
7. Languages & their importance aims to show those at KS3 & KS4 the importance of languages for
their future careers and personal development and fulfilment in an increasingly mobile and
plurilingual world. This activity is not language-specific and is delivered in English.
