Cell Cycle and Mitosis
Your body is composed of more than a billion cells. An identical copy of your hereditary material is found in the _________ of every somatic (what
does somatic mean?___________________) cell in your body. There are 46 chromosomes in each somatic cell. Every time a cell divides, each
chromosome (or DNA molecule) must be carefully replicated and distributed to ensure that each daughter cell gets a complete and accurate set of
information.
The Cell Cycle
The major cell stages are:
Interphase, Mitosis & Cytokinesis.
IPMAT______________________________________________________
Write a sentence in the space above that will help you remember the order.
Interphase is subdivided into:
G1 (growth 1), S (synthesis), G2 (growth 2)
Mitosis is divided into:
P (prophase), M (metaphase), A (anaphase), and T (telophase). Cytokinesis follows.
INTERPHASE:
- the cell is preparing for mitosis
Growth 1
Synthesis
Growth 2
G1: rapid cell growth
S: Synthesis of DNA, producing a replica of every chromosome
G2: growth and preparation for cell division
Draw a sketch of a typical cell in interphase (p.88)
MITOSIS:
Mitosis is nuclear division (and cytokinesis) that produces two identical daughter cells during.
Draw a Draw aend label sketches of each of the stages space
below using pages 88-89 of Nelson Biology 11.
Prophase
- replicated chromosomes condense and become more visible
-nuclear envelope dissolves
- centrioles migrate to opposite poles and form spindle fibres
Metaphase
- spindle fibers align the chromosomes along the middle of the cell
nucleus.
Anaphase
- centromeres divide and the paired chromosomes separate and move to opposite sides of the cell.
Telophase
- chromosomes arrive at opposite poles of cell
- new membranes form around the daughter nuclei.
- the chromosomes lengthen and disperse, and are no longer visible
under the light microscope.
- the spindle fibers disperse dissolve
CYTOKINESIS:
- division of the cytoplasm
animal cell: furrow develops and pinches membrane in two
plant cell: cell plate forms and develops new wall
