Cell Construction Lab
Project Due: Thursday November 3rd
Introduction:
Students will be creating a 3-D model of an animal cell or a plant cell using common materials.
This project will be completed at home. You will need to label the organelles in your model. In class,
students will be presenting their model and will have to identify each organelle and its function.
Requirements:
 The model must be 3-D. Therefore it can not be a poster or only puffy paint.
 The model must be delivered in a box (ex. shoe box, shirt box, etc.)
 Make it neat! Try not to use tape and staples.
 You must find materials that are appropriate in shape and size for the organelles.
Ideas for materials include: yarn, beads, toothpicks, pipe cleaners, food, play-doh,
straws, string… Use different materials and be creative.
 All organelles must be labeled on the cell model or a key must be used. Your name and
science period must appear on the model or the box you bring it in.
 Your cell model should be the correct shape.
 The following is a list of organelles required for the models:
Both cells must include:
Cell membrane, cytoplasm, ribosomes, nucleus, nucleolus, DNA, Golgi complex, vacuole,
mitochondria, endoplasmic reticulum (smooth and rough)
Plant cells must also contain: cell wall and chloroplasts
Animal cells must also contain: lysosomes

Students must also complete the attached worksheet to be handed in with the cell
model.
Dear parent or guardian,
Listed above are the requirements for a “do at home” lab activity. This is a homework
assignment and students that do not have the project on November 3rd will receive a zero for the
project. I would like to thank you in advance for your cooperation with this project. If you have any
questions or concerns take a look at my website for pictures and ideas or contact me at 773-7453.
Please sign and have your student return the bottom of this sheet, so I know you have discussed
this project with your student.
Thank you,
Mrs. Melanson
