8th Grade READ 180/System 44
Literacy 2013-2014
Mr. Tabone
An intensive reading intervention that is scientifically research based to accelerate
reading achievement, using the READ 180 or System 44 program to address individual
needs through adaptive and instructional software, high-interest literature, and direct
instruction in reading and writing skills.
READ 180 & System 44 will allow struggling readers to experience success
becoming better readers.
8th Grade READ 180/System 44 competencies:
Students will learn (based on where they are initially) the five elements of
effective reading: phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and/or text
comprehension as well as spelling, writing, and grammar. Mastery of these will improve
reading skills and increase scores on achievement tests, as well increase classroom
motivation.
Report Card Grades:
The ultimate goal READ 180/System 44 is a student’s success. The Pass/Fail grade
given for this class will be based on several classroom components, including:
 Effort
 Attitude
 Motivation
 Classroom work output
 Attendance
Diagnostic tests (SRI/SPI) are given 4 times a year, and Scholastic Achievement
Manager is utilized for continuous assessment, placement, and monitoring; Reading
Counts quizzes will be given on books that are read independently.
Grades are also based on READ 180 and System 44 “rSkills” written work & quizzes,
Scholastic Reading Counts! Quizzes and Quick Writes and overall class participation,
citizenship, and work output.
Materials:
A marble notebook and personal folder have been assigned to each student
as well as various workbooks and classroom textbooks. These materials should not
leave the room, unless instructed by the teacher.
Our one classroom rule is very simple. Respect everyone and everything. This includes
your classmates, the school property, desks, computers, and books. Most importantly we
will respect each other’s ideas and what each of us says. We don’t interrupt or speak
while someone else is speaking. We listen, we think about it, and then we share.
Parents and Guardians,
The half of sheet below is so that we can be in contact with each other about your
child’s performance and presence in our class. If there are ever any questions or
concerns, please never hesitate to e-mail or contact the school. I hope to be in regular
communication with all of your to share good news and achievements, and handle any
negative issues if they arise. Please take a few minutes to review this sheet about our
class, fill out your information, and send this back with your child. Thank you very
much.
Sincerely,
Mr. Tabone
