WELCOME TO 8th Grade! 8th Grade READ 180/System 44 Literacy 2013-2014 Mr. Tabone An intensive reading intervention that is scientifically research based to accelerate reading achievement, using the READ 180 or System 44 program to address individual needs through adaptive and instructional software, high-interest literature, and direct instruction in reading and writing skills. READ 180 & System 44 will allow struggling readers to experience success becoming better readers. 8th Grade READ 180/System 44 competencies: Students will learn (based on where they are initially) the five elements of effective reading: phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and/or text comprehension as well as spelling, writing, and grammar. Mastery of these will improve reading skills and increase scores on achievement tests, as well increase classroom motivation. Report Card Grades: The ultimate goal READ 180/System 44 is a student’s success. The Pass/Fail grade given for this class will be based on several classroom components, including: Effort Attitude Motivation Classroom work output Attendance Diagnostic tests (SRI/SPI) are given 4 times a year, and Scholastic Achievement Manager is utilized for continuous assessment, placement, and monitoring; Reading Counts quizzes will be given on books that are read independently. Grades are also based on READ 180 and System 44 “rSkills” written work & quizzes, Scholastic Reading Counts! Quizzes and Quick Writes and overall class participation, citizenship, and work output. Materials: A marble notebook and personal folder have been assigned to each student as well as various workbooks and classroom textbooks. These materials should not leave the room, unless instructed by the teacher. Our one classroom rule is very simple. Respect everyone and everything. This includes your classmates, the school property, desks, computers, and books. Most importantly we will respect each other’s ideas and what each of us says. We don’t interrupt or speak while someone else is speaking. We listen, we think about it, and then we share.
