Getting to Know My Dictionary Step by Step

Step One
Time: 1-1.5 hours.
1. Choose a field and select up to 10 words related to this field.
For example: School
Teacher, teach, pupil, learn, whiteboard, marker, textbook,
passage, desks, yard, etc.
2. Arrange the words in an alphabetical order:
Desks, learn, marker, passage, passive, pupil, teach, teacher,
textbook, whiteboard, yard, etc.
3. Arrange words which have the same first letter.
Aloud already
Boy
back
Go
goal
Day
dove
4. Arrange words which have the same first and second letter.
Ear
Fate
Fight
Idea
earth
father
figure
identical
5. Show pupils how to find the words in the dictionary.
It is important to state at the beginning that the principle of
the dictionary is that words are organized alphabetically
from the first to the last letter.
6. Instruct pupils to find the words in the dictionary.
7. Test pupils on Step One.
Step Two
Time: 1-1.5 hours
1. Photocopy onto a transparency a dictionary page of your
choice.
2. Highlight one word.
3. Show the page to the pupils.
4. Show the small numbers and big numbers in the word entry.
5. Explain the meaning of the small number: the part of speech
(adj; adv; noun; verb)
6. Explain the meaning of the large number: the meaning(s) of
the word.
7. Prepare and give the pupils a list of words which belong to a
variety of parts of speech (adjectives, adverbs, nouns, verbs,
prepositions, etc.).
For example: idea, to dream, understanding, beautifully,
economically, psychological, important, expensive, off,
difficult, alphabetical, dictionary, order, identical, etc.
(Notice that some of the words may belong to more than one
category depending on its function in the sentence).
8. Prepare a chart with the different parts of speech the pupils
have learnt.

9. Instruct pupils to write in each word on the list into the
appropriate category.
10. Give the pupils a list of words and their corresponding parts
of speech. Instruct the pupils to translate the words into
Arabic.
For example: Cover (n) is ___________________________ .
11. Test Step Two.
