The aim of personal finance education is to prepare young people to leave school with the confidence, skills and knowledge they need in financial matters so that they can participate fully in society. As part of this programme of work pupils will learn about: the different ways that we get money including wages and pocket money the different ways we can pay for things including cash and “plastic money” the importance of keeping records about what we have and what we spend how to control spending by planning and how the Government raises money through taxes and what they spend it on the various ways to store and protect our money including bank accounts how we can save up for things we want but cannot afford how borrowing works and repayments are structured coping with and avoiding debt the principles of insurance and risk the rights and responsibilities of consumers how personal choices affect others locally, nationally and globally (and vice versa) The lessons will be designed to introduce pupils to personal finance through a range of activities where pupils will be able to share their experiences of, and opinions on, money and personal finance. In addition, pupils will be given assignments which are designed to consolidate their understanding of the topics covered. While we believe that it is vital that pupils learn about money we are aware that this is a potentially sensitive issue and some parents/carers may not be comfortable with their children sharing home experiences in the area of money and personal finance. In order to respect your privacy we would like to assure you that pupils have the right not to share their personal experiences and circumstances in lessons if they or their parents/carers do not wish to do so. The assignments have been designed to encourage pupils to talk to their parents/carers about money and may involve sharing some financial information. If you are not comfortable with any of these activities, please advise us so that we are aware of your wishes and can respect them. If you would like further information on our plans for personal finance education then please visit our website. You can find general information on this topic on the website of pfeg (Personal Finance Education Group) at www.pfeg.org Yours sincerely Mrs Laura Cole Headteacher
