Origins of Judaism Ch. 6 Sec. 1 The Hebrews A new group of people appeared in Southwest Asia between 2000 and 1500 BC known as the Hebrews. Judaism is their religion. Abraham The Hebrew Bible traces the Hebrews back to Abraham. He was told by God to leave Mesopotamia with his family and go west. Abraham’s Journey West Near the Mediterranean Sea, Abraham and his followers settled in Canaan but some later moved to Egypt. Moses Fearing a takeover, the pharaoh made the Hebrews slaves. A leader among the Hebrews, Moses was told by God to lead the Hebrews on a journey out of Egypt known as the Exodus. On Mount Sinai, Moses was given two stone tablets by God with a code of moral laws known as the Ten Commandments. After returning to Canaan, the Hebrews were then known as the Israelites. Later History of Judaism Not being able to agree on a new king caused a split into two kingdoms: Israel and Judah. These people became known as the Jews. The diaspora (dy-AS-pruh) is the scattering of Jews out of Israel and Judah. The Romans conquered the Jews who returned to Jerusalem. Monotheism is the belief in only one God. Judaism is considered the first monotheistic religion. Sacred Texts Jewish law also includes Mosaic law, recorded by Moses. The most sacred text of Judaism is the Torah. Every synagogue has at least one copy. Sacred Texts Rabbis, or religious teachers, study the Torah and religious law. Parts of the Hebrew Bible include the Proverbs and Book of Psalms. Jewish Holidays Jewish holidays include Hanukkah, Passover and High Holy Days. The Shofar horn Shofar horn
