Biology Vocabulary for the Week of Nov. 30 – Dec. 4
1. Prokaryote- cells that do not contain membrane-bound
structures. (example: bacteria)
2. Eukaryote-cells that contain membrane-bound
structure. (examples: plant, animal, fungi, algae)
3. Organelles-membrane-bound structures in eukaryotic
cells that each carry out a specific job.
4. Nucleus-organelle containing DNA in a eukaryotic cell;
it runs all the cell’s activities.
5. Passive Transport-movement of molecules through the
plasma membrane from high concentration to a low
concentration (examples: osmosis and diffusion)
6. Active Transport-movement of molecules through the
plasma membrane requiring energy (ATP) from a low
concentration to a high concentration.
7. Facilitated Diffusion-passive transport of molecules
using a membrane protein.
8. Cell wall-a rigid structure located on the outside of the
plasma membrane of plants, fungi, and most bacteria; it
provides support and protection.
9. Mitochondria-an organelle that transforms energy found
in food (sugar) into ATP
10.Chloroplast-chlorophyll containing organelles found in
the cells of green plants; it captures light and transforms it
into chemical energy
