Project Title: Epigenetic control of axonal regeneration
Research Programme
An exciting opportunity has arisen for two Research Associates in the Centre for
Restorative Neurosciences within the Division of Brain Sciences, Department of
Medicine at the Imperial College London.
You will work on epigenetic control of axonal regeneration in the newly established
laboratory headed by Professor Simone Di Giovanni.
Exciting recent research developments have placed the role of transcriptional
regulation at the centre of the capacity of axons to re-grow after spinal cord injury.
These include work from our laboratory (see Di Giovanni S, on pubmed). Given that
neurological recovery and axonal regeneration are not possible following spinal
injury, understanding how the re-growth of injured axons is controlled is key to
enhancing axonal regeneration and potentially functional recovery. Epigenetic
regulation seems imperative for modulating the complex gene expression program
necessary for the growth of an axon. However, the role of epigenetic changes in
axonal regeneration remains obscure.
These post-doctoral Research Associate posts will be focused on understanding
epigenetic control of axonal regeneration in a number of acute CNS injuries,
including spinal and optic nerve injury and stroke. This has the goal of achieving
ground-breaking discoveries in the field. Extremely ambitious, forward-thinking,
committed, skilled and passionate candidates are invited to apply. The laboratory for
Molecular Neuroregeneration headed by Professor Simone Di Giovanni is a newly
established lab moving from Germany to Imperial College London in the Division of

At Imperial College London you will be based at the Hammersmith Hospital Campus.
You will have a PhD or equivalent in neuroscience, cellular/molecular biology or a
closely related discipline. Experience in molecular and cellular biology, as well as in
in vivo murine work, will be an asset. Interest in gene regulation and axonal
regeneration are a competitive advantage. In addition, you will be expected to submit
publications to high-impact refereed journals. Ability to attract external research
funding is welcome.
These are full-time, fixed-term posts for 12 months initially, with the potential for
extension for a further 24 months.
Research Duties


students and research assistants as required

Education and Qualifications

PhD in neuroscience, cellular/molecular biology
or a closely related
discipline, or equivalent research, industrial or commercial experience
Knowledge and Experience








Knowledge of genetic and epigenetic regulation of neuronal biology
Experience in molecular and cellular biology, as well as in in vivo murine work
Knowledge of research methods and statistical procedures
Practical experience within a research environment and/or publication in
relevant and refereed journals
Experience of dealing with specific groups of people, e.g. sponsors, patients
Practical experience in a broad range of techniques including spinal cord
surgery, molecular and cellular biology such as ChIP, protein IP and primary
culture.
Computer literate with a good knowledge of different computer programmes
with experience in data presentation and statistical analyses
Experience with the use of imaging software would be advantageous
