Reading Comprehension (30%)
Part I
Although to the layperson, anthropology may seem like a homogeneous field of study, it can actually be
divided into two large general fields, physical anthropology and cultural anthropology. The former is usually
classified as a natural science, while the latter is most often categorized as one of the social sciences. Because of the
very different areas of study and methodologies adopted by these two different branches, students are advised to
choose one or the other early in their educational careers.
Physical anthropology, as the name implies, studies material objects including bones, fossils, and other
concrete traces left behind by humans or their ancestors. Physical anthropologists concern themselves with such
questions as the origin of human beings, the course of human evolution, and the development of racial differences
among the many people of our planet. One sub-branch of physical anthropology, paleoanthropology , garnered
worldwide attention during the 1960s when members of the Leaky family made important fossil discoveries in
eastern Africa. Their discoveries revolutionized our concepts of human development and prompted redefinition of
earlier evolutionary theories.
3
Cultural anthropologists, on the other hand, deal with more abstract objects. They are primarily interested in
human societies and often research living communities and cultures rather than the remains of those long dead.
Typical research questions taken up by cultural anthropologists include the origins of religion, the development of
social customs, and the structure of familiar relations. This kind of research is often undertaken through immersion
in the society being studied. A cultural anthropologist studying Eskimos, for example, is much more likely to be
found in the remote reaches of Alaska than in the cozy confines of a university library. According to some cultural
anthropologists, deep understanding can only be achieved by this high degree of participation in a particular culture.
Ruth Benedict, an American researcher who has written extensively on Native-American societies, is considered a
pioneer in this type of fieldwork.
Despite the division of the field into these two distinct spheres of learning, the presence of highly-qualified,
interdisciplinary professionals ensures that anthropology will remain, at least at the highest theoretical levels, an
integrated field.

Part II.
Cumulative Trauma Disorders (CTDs), also known as repetitive motion disorders, after the musculoskeletal
and nervous systems. As their name suggests, CTDs are caused by repetitive motions, overexertion, or poor posture
4
which are sustained over an extended period of time. Although the wrists, elbows, shoulders, back, neck, hips,
knees, and ankles can be affected by a CTD, the disorder most often occurs in the upper body. That these disorders
are not to be taken lightly is only highlighted by the fact that the number of CTD workrelated illnesses has been
increasing steadily every year and is costing businesses billions of dollars in health care spending and lost work time.
Surprisingly, the number of cases of CTDs has risen with the proliferation of computers in the workplace.
CTDs are most often caused by using a keyboard or a mouse incorrectly, for example, not having a proper hand
position while typing, hitting the keys too hard, gripping the mouse too tightly, and not resting periodically or taking
breaks. Those also easily affected include employees involved in manufacturing and assembling parts, making
furniture, sewing, and processing meat.
Symptoms of a CTD are distinctive. The hand’s movements can be impaired through tightness, stiffness, or
pain---often a shooting pain extending from the patient’s wrists to the shoulders, neck, and back. The hands can also
tingle or become numb and cold. Clumsiness increases as the hands lose coordination.
Unfortunately, CTDs are extremely difficult to cure but, luckily, very easy to prevent. Patients have
reversed, or at least eased, the effects of a CTD by taking anti-inflammatory drugs and cortisone injections, applying
ice packs, completing specific exercises, undergoing electrical stimulation and underwater ultrasound, and (often as a
last resort) having surgery. Prevention techniques are simple but often ignored. Ergonomic office spaces and one
minute breaks from repetitive tasks every 20 minutes are essential. Hand position on the keyboard is also vital; palms
should parallel the key, the forearms should be horizontal to the keyboard, and the wrists should remain flat and
level.
(
)9. Which of the following is mentioned as one of the factors of CTDs?
(A) Musculoskeletal disorder
(B) Repetitive motion of the nervous system
(C) A broken elbow
(
(D) Standing incorrectly over a long period of time
)10. According to the passage, CTDs are Most likely to affect the
(A) hips

)11. The word proliferation in the passage 2 is closest in meaning to
(A) addition (B) elevation (C) prevalence (D) introduction

(A) CTD can be caused by using a keyboard incorrectly
(B) CTD is a kind of workrelated disorder
(C) CTD affects the nervous system.
(D) CTD only affects those people who use computers often.
)13.The word distinctive in the passage 3 is closest in meaning to
