Russia in Afghanistan 1979-1985
The Russian-Afghanistan war was a war of the USSR supported the communist Democratic
Republic of Afghanistan against the Mujahideen Resistance who were the Afghanistan holy
fighters. The Russian occupation started in December 1979, since they were invited by the
Afghanistan government. Even though the Russians had superior technology and firepower
they were outflanked by the Mujahideen fighters who knew the environment and were fighting
to defend their homeland. However there was over 1 million people killed in Afghanistan who
were killed in the conflict of the Russian vs. Resistance. There were also many unconfirmed
reports of soldiers killing civilians to destroy resistance moral. Finally in 1985 Russia
Because of the cost in both lives and economy to Russia it was compared to America’s Vietnam
war. Ultimetly Russia removed its soldiers from Afghanistan losing the war. Just like Vietnam
the war was really on ideals with Russia not wanting to lose the communist governments that it
supported. It also showed that Russia was not invincible and the war placed a tremendous cost
on it’s already weakening economy. It had a large part in the Cold War because it the politics
involved
