Chemistry 1152 Exam #1 Study Guide
Exam will have 100 points.
You will be allowed one hour to complete the exam.
The exam will be a mix of multiple-choice and show your work problems,
following the format of the quizzes and mid-term on the homepage.
Review your quizzes, homework problems, class notes, instructor’s homepage,
Chang’s web site and textbook.
Chapter 24
1. Write the general formula for and provide examples for, and identify in a compound
each of the following organic functional groups:
 alkane
 alcohol
 ester
 alkene
 ether
 amine
 alkyne
 aldehyde
 nitro
 cycloalkane
 ketone
 aromatic
 carboxylic acid
2. Use IUPAC rules to name:
 alkanes
 alkynes
 cycloalkanes
 alkenes
 aromatics
3. Draw and name all of the possible isomers given the chemical formula of an alkane.
4. Use the following groups in naming organic compounds
 methyl
 t-butyl
 iodo
 ethyl
 amino
 nitro
 n-propyl
 fluoro
 vinyl
 n-butyl
 chloro
 phenyl
 isopropyl
 bromo
5. Be able to identify the products of an alkane halogenation reaction.
6. Define what a free radical is and show by a chemical equation the steps in which
chlorine can be used to generate free radicals.
7. Define what is meant by chiral and achiral molecules.
8. Be able to identify asymmetric carbon(s) is a chemical structure.
9. Give an example of a substituted alkane that is optically active.
10. Know what is meant by the terms saturated and unsaturated hydrocarbon compounds.
11. Use cis and trans to specify geometric isomers in alkenes. Know why there are cis and
trans isomers for alkenes, but not alkanes and alkynes.
12. Be able to identify the products of reactions of alkenes and alkynes with hydrogen and
halogenated compounds (addition reactions).
13. Justify polarity and expected boiling point trends for geometric isomers.
14. Describe the concept of resonance in aromatic compounds.
15. Know that aromatic compounds under go substitution reactions rather then addition
reactions with halogenated compounds.
16. State how a condensation reaction is characterized.
17. Know what polycyclic aromatic compounds are.
18. Define carbonyl and show by example the difference in chemical structures of
aldehydes and ketones.
Chapter 11
1. Characterize the properties of gases, liquids and solids in terms of density,
compressibility and motion of molecules.
2. Distinguish between intermolecular and intramolecular forces.
3. Identify and give examples of the following forces:
 ion – ion
 induced dipole – induced dipole
 ion – dipole
 van der Waals
 ion – induced dipole
 dispersion
 dipole – dipole
 London
 dipole – induced dipole
 hydrogen bonding
4. Relate polarizability and intermolecular forces.
5. Suggest why H2O, HF and NH3 do not follow the expected trend as shown by the plot
in Figure 11.6.
6. Use the concepts of intermolecular forces to explain surface tension, capillary action,
cohesion, adhesion and viscosity.
7. Describe the structure of water and relate it to why ice is less dense then water.
8. Distinguish between crystalline and amorphous solids and give examples of each.
9. Characterize ionic, covalent, molecular and metallic crystals including general
properties and examples of each.
Happy studying !!
Good Luck !!
