Course Objectives for CH 1020 Spring 2017 Chapter 19: Organic Chemistry Big Ideas The physical properties of organic compounds can be predicted from the molecular structure. Organic compounds can be organized by functional groups (collections of atoms within a molecule that behave as a unit in a recognizable and predictable manner). After studying this chapter you should be able to: 1. Identify alkanes, alkenes, alkynes, alcohols, ethers, amines, carboxylic acids and simple aromatic compounds. 2. Name alkanes, alkenes, alkynes and alcohols. 3. Understand and predict some physical properties of simple organic compounds (water, solubility, bp, mp, vapor pressure) from a consideration of their structure, polarity and intermolecular forces. 4. Interpret different structural representations of organic molecules, including full structural formula, condensed structural formula, carbon skeleton formula, balland-stick model and space filling model. 5. Recognize and distinguish between isomers of a compound including structural isomers and cis/trans isomers.
