Job Title: Post-doctoral Research Assistant Job ref no: CBS/0069/17 Grade: 6 Department: Comparative Biomedical Sciences Accountable to: Professors Jonathan Elliott/Caroline WheelerJones Responsible for: N/A Job summary: This two year post-doctoral research assistant post offers an exciting opportunity for a talented cell and molecular biologist to gain experience in applying their knowledge and skills to comparative research into the pathogenesis of chronic kidney disease. The research has applications to both human and veterinary medicine. Cell pathways involved in the response of proximal convoluted tubule epithelial cells (PTECs) to stimuli that are relevant to the disease initiation and progression will be studied. Primary cultures of feline PTECs will be compared to human cells lines which retain PTEC phenotype. Training will be offered in a range of relevant techniques and in the background physiology and disease pathophysiology within a supportive vibrant group. Interaction with an industry partner will ensure the successful candidate gains an appreciation of the research and development process in a commercial organisation. Competency: Analysis and Research Key tasks To isolate and culture proximal tubular epithelial cells from feline kidneys obtained at post-mortem examination in our veterinary hospitals To design experiments to determine the responses of these cells to a variety of external stimuli relevant to chronic kidney disease (CKD) initiation and progression To analyse protein and gene expression and undertake pathway analysis to determine the interaction of key pathways driving fibrosis in CKD in response to external stimuli To present and publish results at international conferences and in high quality journals Competency: Communication Key tasks: To communicate effectively with all relevant team members (technicians, PhD students, veterinary nurses, clinicians and, potentially, cat owners) and industry scientists and professionals Train undergraduate students working in the laboratory how to undertake techniques relevant to their project work Communicate results in oral and written format to a range of audiences with different levels of knowledge Competency: Knowledge and Experience Key tasks: To undertake personal continuing professional development in order to keep abreast of current best practice in research and teaching. Competency: Planning and Organising Key tasks: Organise systems to maximise the chances of getting viable tissue for primary cell culture Plan and organise experiments around tissue availability Work to meet deadlines for reporting to the sponsor and abstract submission for meetings Competency: Liaison and Networking Key tasks: Attend meetings and effectively network with the clinical community in the College Interact closely with the feline research group to gain an understanding of feline CKD, its clinical progression and owner-related concerns Attend international conferences to network with scientists working in the fields of cell biology in general and nephrology in particular Make industry contacts to increase your awareness of how this research may have impact in development of novel therapeutics in the future Competency: Work Environment Key tasks: To assist in maintaining a safe working environment by: - Attending basic and specialist health and safety training, as required - Following local procedures for safe working practices and the College’s Health and Safety Policy Flexibility: The post holder may be required to perform non-specified, complementary work in response to the changing needs of the position.
