Lesson Title: Probability Lesson 1
School
Date
Grade(s)
Learning Goal (Curriculum Expectations)
demonstrate, through investigation, an understanding of fairness in a game and relate this to the occurrence of equally likely
outcomes
Lesson Components
Before
Have the students brainstorm all the words they know about
probability. As they come up with the words plot them on a
probability continuum line from impossible to certain.
Discuss that some words may mean the same thing (fair
chance/equally likely).
Anticipated Student Responses
Also discuss that probability means chance; you can have a
discussion regarding the difference between skill and
chance.
During
Have the students write 5 sentences to show that they know the meaning of the words:
Certain/always/100%
Likely/probably
Equal chance/ maybe/ 50% chance 50/50 /Equally likely/
Unlikely/ improbable/ uncertain
Impossible/never 0% chance
After (Consolidation)
Have students share their sentences to ensure they have a
strong understanding of the words and how they can be
used.
Have a class discussion about words that are used
incorrectly.
Talk about what does fair mean? Not always ½ and ½ but
also 1/3, 1/3, 1/3
After (Highlights and Summary)
Co-create a word list for all the words that students will need to know for probability. Pick some sentences to put on the
anchor chart for students to refer to the words and their meaning.
After (Practice)
Michael has 8 white shirts and 2 blue shirts in a bag. He
takes 1 shirt from the bag without looking. Which best
describes the chance that the shirt Michael takes from the
bag is blue? Explain your thinking.
