Dear Parents,
Please ensure that your children read for 10-15 min
each day Monday through Thursday. Children are also
encouraged to read on weekends or to have a parent,
sibling or friend read to them. Time spent reading to
your child may also be included in the log as long as
your student read for the required 10-15 min Monday
through Thursday.
Thanks,
Kim Spatz.
Dear Parents,
A big thank you to Angela Beymer for helping students with
our classroom newspaper last week and to Claire Campbell
for reading with our students on Friday.
It’s a big week at Holy Family this week. Ash Wednesday,
March 1, marks the beginning of Lent and the beginning of
our journey to Holy Week and Easter. The children are
making charcoal crosses in art and we will learn about the
three pillars of Lent: prayer, almsgiving and fasting. On
Ash Wednesday, will talk about poor choices from which we
would like to “fast” and privately write some of those
choices on strips of paper to be burned and offered up to
God. Also, as part of our Lenten journey I ask that each
child, once again, do an extra chore around the house each
week to “earn” a can of food for St. Vincent de Paul. The
children may bring in their cans any day/s throughout Lent.
Also this week…It’s Dr. Suess’ birthday and Read Across
America Day on Thursday, March 2! To celebrate we will have
a week of fun activities. Remember to read to your child
each night, and have your child wear crazy socks on
Tuesday, a favorite hat on Thursday, and something green on
Friday.
This week our Star of the Week is Quincy. Next week our
star will be Noa Kaopuiki-Delaney. We continue to write
letters to the star each week and make up a booklet of
these letters for our star. Your child is taking home a
copy of the letter he/she has written to the star each
week. I hope you are enjoying reading them. Many of the
children put lots of thought into these to ensure they are
personalized and meaningful.
In math this week we will continue to practice double-digit
addition and subtraction and we will learn how to estimate
when adding or subtracting double-digit numbers.
In spelling we are learning about contractions. The
children should know this word and understand the meaning
of the word “contract.” In a contraction, we contract
(shorten) two words to make one word. Another word they
should know is “apostrophe.” We put an apostrophe in a
contraction where letters are omitted.
I want to give everyone early notice that second grade will
not lead Mass on April 13 (Holy Thursday) as previously
noted. Instead, Father Rodell has asked us to lead Stations
of the Cross on Friday, April 14 (Good Friday).
On another note…In second grade we are having trouble,
particularly with some of the boys, not being inclusive and
not making others feel welcome to join in activities at
recess. I would like to ask your support in talking to
your children about this and emphasizing the importance of
being inclusive. Our rule in the lower grades at Holy
Family, is that every child is welcome to join in any game
in which other children are engaged at recess. Thank you!
Blessings,
Kim Spatz
