Producers, Consumers, and Decomposers
Decompose: to break down materials into smaller pieces so they can be reused
in an ecosystem.
Decomposers: an ecological niche; an organism that breaks down materials so
they can be reused in an ecosystem.
All ecosystems contain decomposers to recycle matter.
Example: landfill—populations of bacteria, fungi, worms, and millipedes make up
a community that is working hard to decompose (break down) matter.
Producers: An organism that can make its own food (Ex. Plants).
Consumers: An organism that cannot make its own food and therefore must eat
other organisms (Ex. Wolves).
