The West and the World, 1815-1914-Chapter 24 & World War One with Russian Revolution-Chapter 25 Exam Date: Thursday, April 7, 2016 Objectives 1. Explain how the Industrial Revolution resulted in the rise of global inequality. 2. Explain two different schools of thought as to how the West created its great wealth. 3. Identify and explain the factors that resulted in the growth of the world economy. Consider the roles of (1) Britain and its colonial empire and (2) the conquest of distance through developments in transportation via land and sea. 4. Explain why and how the West forced the economic opening of China and Japan. 5. Explain how and why Egypt went from being a strong, modern state to being a British colony. 6. Describe statistical patterns in migration from Europe. 7. Identify characteristics of the typical European migrant and explain European migrants’ reasons for leaving. 8. Identify characteristics of the typical Asian migrant and explain Asian migrants’ reasons for leaving. 9. Explain how the European nations carved up Africa. Which European countries participated? Which 2 countries gained the most territory? Which 2 African countries remained independent, and why? What conflicts did the imperialist nations enter with the peoples in Africa and with one another? How did the European nations govern their colonies? 10. Explain how the western nations extended their political control in Asia. Which European countries participated? Which parts of Asia did they take, and how did acquire those territories? 11. Explain western motives for the new imperialism. Consider economic motives, political and diplomatic motives, ideological motives (both racist Social Darwinism and the more humanitarian civilizing mission/white man’s burden), religious motives, exploratory motives, social/political pressures within the western countries, and the role of special-interest groups. 12. Note that there were 2 revolutions, one in March (overthrow the tsar) and one in November (overthrow the provisional government and establish communism). 7. Explain the causes of the Russian Revolution. This includes explaining the specific causes of first the March revolution and then the Bolshevik revolution. 8. Describe Lenin’s leadership and explain Lenin’s ideology; that is, what ideas were central for Lenin. 9. Explain the causes and consequences of Russia’s civil war (1918-1920).
