Activities for students
The Reindeer’s Names
Names from Verbs
I. Some of the reindeer’s names come from verbs. Dancer from dance, dasher from dash,
prancer from prance. We’re all sure you know what ‘dance’ means. But can you choose the
correct definition of the other two verbs.
1. Dash
a) to misbehave
b) to put a line under something
c) to move quickly
2. Prance
a) to damage
b) to move in a lively manner
c) to fly
II. In English we can often make the nouns for professions by adding ‘er’ to the end of a verb.
You already know that your teacher is someone who can teach. We can also add ‘or’ to make
the names of other jobs. Decide if the following verbs need ‘er’ or ‘or’ at the end.
Act ……………..
Direct …………..
Drive …………...
Govern …………
Instruct………....
Interpret ………..
Manage …………
Train …………....
Translate ………..
Write ……………
Remember what you must do before adding a suffix to words that end in ‘e’.
Names from Nouns
III. How about the names Comet and Cupid? They are things which fly but what is the best
definition of each?
1. Comet
a) a small planet
b) a large piece of ice that orbits the sun
c) a meteor
2. Cupid
a) an angel
b) a fairy
c) a small child
IV. Vixen is the name for a female fox. Often in English we make the feminine form of a
noun by adding the ending ‘ess’. For example lion becomes lioness.
It should be noted that this is quite old fashioned and it is only used for some nouns.
Try and make the female forms of these.
Tiger - ……………
God - ……………..
Actor - ……………
Poet- ………………
Count - …………….
