★ Sex education begun to be
taught in schools, birth
control pills, Many women were
tired of seen as “sex objects”

women’s viewpoints.
The Feminine Mystique by: Betty Friedan
● Excerpt: “Experts told them how to catch a man and keep him, how
breastfeed children and handle their toilet training… how to dress,
look, and act more feminine and make marriage more exciting… They
were taught to pity the neurotic unfeminine, unhappy women who wanted
to be poets or physicists or presidents. They learned that truly
feminine women do not want careers, higher education, political
rights- the independence...opportunities that the old- fashioned
feminists fought for.
● Summary: The author, Betty Friedan, gave not only women but men, of
this life changing time an insight to what was becoming of the U.S.
women, especially in the suburban area. Scientist were making a
“rulebook” on how women should be feminine.
