Long Term Effects of Exercise
Muscular System
Sporting examples of Aerobic and
Anaerobic Respiration
Endurance Events – Mostly ________ respiration (Work for long
periods of time).
During a 1500m run we mainly use oxygen to produce energy. This is aerobic
respiration.

List some more activities where we use mainly oxygen to produce our
energy.
Speed and Power Events – ___________ respiration (maximum
effort over very short period of time).
During a 100m sprint we do not use oxygen to produce our energy as it cannot
get to the muscles quick enough. This is called anaerobic respiration.

Can you list any other activities that use anaerobic respiration?
Aerobic and Anaerobic – Use both types of respiration
During a 400m race a mixture of both types of respiration is used to provide
energy for the working cells. For the first 10-15 seconds energy is provided
using anaerobic respiration. For the rest of the race the body produces and
maintains oxygen supply to the muscles using aerobic respiration.

Games such as Football and Netball use both types of respiration, as they
require short bursts of energy to sprint to the ball and reach a pass using
the anaerobic system. At all other times players are moving around using
the aerobic system.
What Is? – Drugs
1. What is a reason for taking drugs in sport?

Indicators of health and well-being:
1.
Satisfaction with aspects of life –
consider health / diet / job
pressures
2. Frequency of positive and negative feelings – the more positive
feelings the more healthy and balanced you are likely to be
3.
Frequency of feelings or activities which may have a
positive or negative impact on well-being – taking part in sport
may promote positive feelings, happiness and enjoyment whereas activities such
as taking illegal substances may lead to negative feelings
4. Access to green space –
having somewhere to go rather than being
stuck in a crowded place all the time might relieve stress and make people feel
good
5.
Level of participation in other activities –
those who are more
active are often happier
6. Positive mental health –
being happy and optimistic about the future,
the more relaxed you are you are more likely to have positive mental health
Think of these as questions you can ask someone to establish whether
they are following a healthy, balanced lifestyle. Remember you may
need to give examples, ie being satisfied with life may include having
balance of healthy activities and a good work/life balance
Indicator:
Satisfaction with aspects of life
Frequency of positive and negative feelings
Frequency of feelings or activities which may
have a positive or negative impact on wellbeing
