Macbeth: Motif and Propaganda
In order to demonstrate your understanding of Macbeth, its issues and elements, AND
propaganda techniques used in persuasion, you will work in groups of two or three to produce a
commercial. You will write a proposal to GHS Enterprise Agency, hoping that we’ll select your
advertisement for holiday season prime-time viewing slots. Once we’ve approved your proposal,
it will be time to film the commercials, and we’ll select class winners from among all
participants.
Proposal Directions and Components:
Page through the play and find text evidence of your assigned motif. Write this evidence down,
and include commentary that will support a product you can sell. You might find evidence for a
political ad, a public service announcement, or an appeal to patriotism. Some character(s) might
need medical products, or the services of a psychic healer. Others might find extra strength hand
sanitizer* useful, or desire a new sword-polishing product*. Your group can even produce a
movie trailer if you are so inclined. Regardless of choice, do you have sufficient text evidence to
support development of your product?
*You may not use these examples as your products.
What product should you sell, and which type of advertising works best for this product? How
will the product be used? What purpose does this product serve?
Determine your target audience. Which character(s) will your product most appeal and apply to,
and why? Are there others in the play who need your product? Who, and why? What are the
demographics of your audience?
You must use three different propaganda techniques in your advertisement. You may choose
from bandwagon, testimonial, transfer, plain folks, glittering generalities, name calling, and card
stacking. Which three appeals are best supported by the evidence you’ve found and the product
you’ve created? You will write one paragraph for each technique.
How is your advertisement relevant to Macbeth? Why this ad for this product?
Please make sure you can answer each question proposed above. This should take about six+
paragraphs, which are due to your English III teacher November 4 or 5, 2013. If you have
questions, please speak Mr. Grumet, Mrs. Hamlin, or Mr. Sanford.
I have read and understand the requirements for Macbeth: Propaganda and Motif. To receive
additional assistance, I know I can contact my English III teacher.
