Infusion Objective/s
6-4-09 Identify the planets in the solar system and describe their size relative to the Earth and their
position relative to the Sun.
6-4-10 Classify planets as inner or outer planets, based on their position relative to the asteroid belt,
and describe characteristics of each type.
Demonstrates critical thinking with Information Communication Technology (ICT) to plan and gather
information
Demonstrates creative thinking with Information Communication Technology (ICT) to produce and
communicate information
Lesson Plan Details
Activate: Using word games such as the example “My Very Educated Mother Just Served Us Nine Pizza’s”, students
will learn the names of all nine planets (including Pluto as a dwarf Planet) in order from the sun. Using a PowerPoint
presentation, show pictures of the planets, pointing out some of their differences (differences between inner and
outer planets, colours, rings, etc.).
Have students pick their top 3 favorite planets, and using that assign them each to a planet (except Earth).
Acquire: Students will gather information in groups of same planets (generally 3 students per planet) from websites
to fill in a graphic organizer about the planet of their choosing. Encourage accuracy. Some pre-teaching of terms,
measurements etc. may be necessary depending on the group.
Research should be done on planet size compared to the earth, order from the sun, distance from the sun, gravity
compared to the earth, inner/outer planets, etc. See attached graphic organizer example.

Once students have filled in the graphic organizer, and had it looked over by a teacher they will make a PowerPoint
presentation showing the things that they learned about their planet. All categories from their graphic organizer
should be in their PowerPoint presentation. Once all information is in, encourage them to find pictures of their planet
and images that they can add to their presentation to make it more aesthetically pleasing.
Apply: Students will present their PowerPoint Presentations to the class. They will have to log in to the networked
laptop, locate their completed PowerPoint Presentation, and present it to the class.
For the teacher there is a potential to do some cross-curricular assessment (e.g. ELA – Speaking)
