Blastula: A hollow ball of cells. Many organisms form this when they grow in size to about 256 cells. It is an early stage in embryo development. Mitochondria: An organelle in many types of cells. It is the energy factory of cells. Mitochondria were probably originally bacteria that became symbiotic with other cells. They have their own distinct DNA! Chloroplasts: An organelle in many plant, bacteria and protist cells. Chloroplasts are green and contain chlorophyll. This is where photosynthesis happens. Chloroplasts were once independent bacteria cells, probably cyanobacteria (the same bacteria that gave us an oxygen atmosphere!). Nucleus: Not found in Archea or Bacteria. The nucleus is found in Eukaryote cells and contains the DNA in a cell. It has a separate membrane that protects the nucleus. Bilateral: Has a left and right side. Organisms that have a left and right side are bilateral. Some bilateral organisms start off with a left and right side and then develop into a different shape or symmetry (starfish and flounder are examples). Collagen: A protein that is the glue that keeps the cells of animals together. Cellulose: A starch like chemical that is the glue that keeps the cells of plants together. Chitin: A starch like chemical that is the glue that keeps the cells of fungi together. Chitin is also the chemical that makes the exoskeletons of insects and related organisms. True Tissue: Muscles, Nerves, Skin…. True Organs: Hearts, Livers, Stomachs, Brains….
