Elodea Cell Lab
Purpose: Students will observe organelles inside the plant cell and the effects
of osmosis on these structures.
Procedures: Prepare a wet mount of Elodea. Place a small piece in the drop of
water and place a cover slip on top. Observe the cells under low, medium and
high power magnification.
Part 1. Draw and color the Elodea cells:
low power
medium power
high power
Label the: cell wall,
nucleus, chloroplast &
cytoplasm
1. What color do you see inside the cell? ________________________
2. What is the shape of the green organelles inside the cell wall? ____
3. What is the name of the organelle? __________________________
4. What substance makes these organelles green? ________________
c
5. What is the function of the green organelle?___________________

6. Write the formula for photosynthesis. _______________________

7. What type of energy do plant cells need to perform photosynthesis?

Part 2: Lift the cover slip and gently remove some water with a paper towel.
Add 1 or 2 drops of salt solution on the elodea leaf. Replace the cover slip and
observe under low, medium and high power for several minutes.
Draw the Elodea cells in salt solution and record what magnification used.
Label and color the cell wall, chloroplasts, cytoplasm and nucleus.
