Music terms: are written in italian, german and french
ex. Russian conductor, tells the orchestra "piano" he
is talking in italian.
music notation is a universal language.
the notation- is a short hand for writing music ; that
can be read by musicians in any country. the notation
stays the same.
conductors conduct from a score.
the history of music reflects its time, environment,
feeling, even racial/ cultural make up.
uses for music: all occasions, weddings, funerals,etc.
live music - has moments that can never be recaptured
but are of the moment of performance. special, having
a spark, energy that is there for the moment.
Pitch-highness or lowness of a sound. Dependent on
vibrations.
soprano-highest voice; bass-lowest
he played a tape using Aborigenes hollowed out
instrument with a low pitch and no clear melody.
tone color or timbre-quality of sound
rhythm-is like a heartbeat. a big element of music.
specifically how music is organized in time.
intervals- series of notes in whole steps and half
steps
melody- a series of single notes that add up to a
recognizable whole.
or a series of notes that are perceived as a unit.
ex. like writing a sentence.
meter- organization of beats into regular groups ex.
4/4 time.
he played a Dave Brubek piece in 7/8 meter.
then he played a Baja peace in 9/6/9 meter.
Harmony- simultaneous sounding of tones. made up of
triads or chords.
major chords are upbeat, bright and happy.
minor chords sad and somber.
consonance-pleasing tones sounded together
dissonance-displeasing tones sounded together
played Ivor Stravinski's Right of Spring
musical texture-transparent, dense, heavy, thick, or
light.
monophonic-one sound, one melody, no harmony
homophonic- chords and harmony, more than one
polyphonic-several, many
played a keltic instumental piece called The Cowboy
Jig.
He also played a bit from Handel's Messiah.
Form-the shape, structure, or organization of music.
most common form is Rondo (spelling?) A,B,A
played an example of a Hawaiian versian of Somewhere

also played Bobby McFarren.
Finally, he played Stravinski's "Firebird" from a
Fantasia 2000 CD
to illustrate all the elements sounded together.
