Format for Planning Teaching Episodes Curriculum Area: English Year Level: Year 7 General Topic: Myths and Legends Time Allocated: 1 hour Learning Outcomes: Students will prepare for their creative responses by reimagining the myth of Pyramus and Thisbe. Students will learn about the history of the myth and the ways that it has been transformed over time. Students will learn about a specific historical period of their choice. Students will learn about using details to improve creative writing. Students’ Prior Understanding/Experience/Knowledge: Knowledge of the myth of Pyramus and Thisbe from the previous class. Some critical awareness of myth of Pyramus and Thisbe from the previous class. Resources: Computers with Internet access. Use of online resources: Wikispaces; Youtube; Encyclopaedia Britannica Web site; About.com Web site; suite101 Web site; Webmuseum Website; Victoria and Albert Museum Web site; Renaissance shop Web site; Australian National University Web site; BBC Website; Victoriana Web site; Victorian Station Web site; WorldWar1.net; ww-ghosts.com; battlefields Web site. Procedure: Introduction (stimulus/motivation) Students will begin by exploring aspects of Pyramus and Thisbe they will not have known. They will use the links provided to conduct research into the various versions of the myth from different historical periods. The students will watch a video of the Beatles perform the myth. Sequence of learning activities (incl. steps, key questions, examples of content, student and teacher roles, grouping etc) Students will be informed that it is their task to conduct Web based research into one of the historical periods listed for them. Students are informed that they are to collect details on one historical period in order to rewrite the myth of Pyramus and Thisbe in a different context. Students will collect information on three subjects within their field. Conclusion Students will record their findings on a worksheet designed for the exercise. Students will be informed that their findings will be used to make a mini-myth as practice for the major creative response in this unit. Assessment of student learning: Students will be able to demonstrate knowledge of certain aspects of the historical period they chose to examine when they come to write their mini-myths. Students will demonstrate knowledge of how writers use details and contexts to influence their material.
