ABOUT PRIMARY
Primary is an artist-led space that supports creative research through artist studios and residencies, public
exhibitions and events. Through a continuity of ambition – from securing the building and establishing high
quality artists studios, to developing new partnerships and shaping the public programme – Primary has
rapidly flourished into a key artist-led organisation in the region.
Officially opened in 2012, Primary was set up by Nottingham Studios Ltd, a not-for-profit organisation
established as a registered charity (in 2009), transforming a former Victorian school building in Radford into
a centre for artistic production in the region. Primary offers dedicated artists’ studios for over thirty selected
residents, including individual artists, collectives, two independent gallery projects, and a print-making and
ceramics workshop. Alongside the studios, Primary is home to several independent businesses that further
enhance the organisation: a design studio, the Small Food Bakery, and a recently established garden project
in the former playground. Over the coming years, we aim to continue to develop the site and grow as a
holistic organisation.
The public programme at Primary has developed a strong position focused on the processes involved in
artistic production, including significant new commissions by national and international artists, and
partnerships with a wide range of other organisations. The first year of the ‘Intersections’ programme has
allowed us to develop new relationships with community partners in the local area. The programme is
integrated, with research, production, presentation, engagement and learning all seen as part of a whole.
Over the last two years, we have significantly developed our audiences, both live and online and aim to
continue to do this in coming years. The strength of this programme is intertwined with our ability to foster
the talent of resident artists, through space for production and experimentation, critical dialogue, and studio
visits. As the staff team expands we look forward to further developing this area of work.
For Primary, being artist-led means that 50% of our Board of Trustees are artists. Primary residents engage
with the organisation through regular forum meetings and sub-groups that provide feedback and guidance on
different areas of work. The staff team operates at the heart of Primary; each role forms an essential part of
developing the organisation, working directly with artists and the public. In developing the team we’re looking
for people with specific skills, but also the passion and commitment to work as part of this team around a
shared vision for Primary.
Like all small arts organisations, fundraising is an ongoing area of work across all roles. With the support of
Nottingham City Council and Arts Council England we have secured a diversity of income including
expanded income generation and grant funding from the Foyle Foundation, Esmee Fairbairn Foundation,
Henry Moore Foundation, The Elephant Trust, and Garfield Weston Foundation. We are looking to build on
these successes to become an increasingly sustainable organisation.
Nottingham Studios Ltd. are looking for a Development Manager to join the team at this exciting time in the
development of Primary, and take an active and strategic role in fundraising, organisational management
and partnership development.
