NO Number of Employees 3000 Description of research activity: Subject: Collaboration in FP6 of European Union Contact Person: Oktay Erbatur (Professor of Industrial & Analytical Chemistry) Department of Chemistry Cukurova University 01330 Adana Turkey Phone: +90-322-338 6540 Fax: +90-322-338 6070 e-mail: [email protected] Topic 1: Cloning and Expression of Feed Upgrading Enzymes in Spirulina sp. Some beneficial enzymes may be clonned and expressed in microalgae, such as lysozyme (immune stimulating and anti-bacterial enzyme) and phytase (fitat degragating and P liberating enzyme; especially used to supplement feed and food for creating less manure and reducing risk of environmental pollution. Recombinant Spirulina sp (cyanobacterium) cells carrying such enzymes may be used directly to feed animal, fish or indirectly for human consumption. Alternatively all these enzymes may be isolated from Spirulina cell after harvesting the recombinant cyanobacterium. Currently, it is difficult to clone genes in Spirulina sp. because of lack of transformation systems and available vectors for most of the microalgae including the cyanobacterium spirulina. Therefore we are targeting now to develop gene transfer systems and construction of a new vector for spirulina. After establishing gene transfer and expression systems for spirulina, cultivation of recombinant spirulina cells and extraction/developing enrichment techniques with respect to the valuable enzyme and other health and nutritionally beneficial components will be developed. Type of FP6 Project: STREP (The above topic is consistent with some of the priority topics to be announced in the third call of Food Quality and Safety thematic area) Partners Sought: • One SME from any country experienced in microalgae production who will produce newly developed Spirulina sp. cyanobacterium in pilot-plant scale in one of the Mediterranean areas. • One SME and/or one applied research group from food & nutrition research institutes or universities from any country to develop new and innovative ready-toeat products and semi-prepared foodstuffs by using the extracts of newly developed cyanobacterium and to carry out the relevant analysis and tests on these food material. Contact person of research groups aggreed to collaborate (no formal aggreement yet) and the relevant research work they will be responsible: Professor Avigad Vonshak, Ben-Gurion University of the Negev, Microalgal Biotechnology Unit, 84105 Beer-Sheva, ISRAEL (Please write here what you propose in one or two sentences) Professor Numan Ozcan, Department of Zootechnology, Faculty of Agriculture, Adana 01330, Turkey Genetic transformations via enzyme cloning in Spirulina sp.
